Mr. Hancock's Signature Review
Mr. Hancock's Signature Feature
The dead appear to walk in Monteray.
Mr. Hancock s body has returned home via train in a small, flat-land town. No one awaits its arrival, and the name has become near forgotten.
Young Ian Washington remembers Mr. Hancock, seeing the man briefly one night as a boy visiting country tombstones, a night which stands out more than any memory of his uprooted youth. For amidst those headstones, he witnessed a deep, black stone shine and heard a hum which still resonates at times when he closes his eyes.
Convinced the stranger s body deserves its peace in that family cemetery, Ian takes it upon himself to discover a way to return Mr. Hancock home. Before he learns how, a strange thief drags Mr. Hancock s body during a week s worth of mornings to locations that define Monteray s history: the renovated bed and breakfast, the burned ruins of the town s movie theater, the lone smokestack doomed to be knocked to the earth.
Suspicions rise that the dragging is more than a typical vandal s handiwork, unsettling a populace unprepared for dark rumors that threaten their sense of peace. Thus with the aid of a funeral proprietor and a notorious drunk turned preacher, Ian Washington chases Mr. Hancock s trail hoping to give the body rest before the town s growing unease leads to more than fearful whispers.
The more they uncover, the more they begin to doubt that mortal man works behind Mr. Hancock s plight.
While meanwhile each night, Mr. Hancock s body lays silent and helpless while events drag it into the stinging light of day.
